Roberta Weintraub, Founder & Executive
Director
Los Angeles Police Academy Magnet Schools (LAPAMS)

As a dedicated Los Angeles Unified School
District Board member from 1979-1993 (Board President Œ
‘79-‘81, ‘88-ˆ89), Mrs. Weintraub
was acutely aware of the need for home grown Police Officers
in our city.
In 1995, she enlisted the support of the
Mayor of Los Angeles, the Superintendent of LAUSD and the
Police Chief of the LAPD, to establish an unprecedented
partnership to create the now highly successful Police Academy
Magnet Schools.
By concentrating on thematic academics,
discipline, community service, physical fitness, moral and
ethical studies, these Police Academy Cadets would return
(after further education) to help their communities as members
of law enforcement.
Mrs. Weintraub’s determination made
it happen. The result is a six-campus program with over
1,400 cadets, a 98% college-bound graduation rate and best
of all, former cadets who are now members of L.A.P.D.
Mrs. Weintraub has been a member of: the
City of Los Angeles Library Commission, the State Bar Board
of Governors, the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles
Private Industry Council and Workforce L.A. She is the founder
of Students Run L.A., founder and Executive Director of
High-Tech High-LA and Co-Executive Director of the LA COPS
after school program. She was also the writer, producer
and host of the Emmy Award Winning "School Beat"
educational talk Show.
Mrs. Weintraub has a B.A. from U.C.L.A.
and has done graduate studies at the John F. Kennedy School
of Government at Harvard University
